Rockin' Respect:
Spreading the Word to End the Word
Hey! My name is Roxanne Riggio and I am trying to ban the r word. I want to do this because using the r word hurts the feelings of people with disabilities. This is important to me because people in my past have tried to bring me down with words. They told me that I couldn't do all of the things that normal people, without disabilities, can do. For instance, they told me that I couldn't get my driver's license or have my own credit card. They told me that I couldn't participate in sports like track and field and swimming or that I would never go to college. They told me that I couldn't live alone and that I would have to live with my parents forever. But I have proved them all wrong. I have my own credit card and even though it took me seven years, I have my own driver's license. I spent four years on my high school's swimming team and even received my Varsity letter during my junior year. I also have attended classes at my local community college. My dream is to become a first grade teacher for students with special needs.
Because of all my accomplishments, I try to advocate for my peers and encourage them to achieve their own dreams. One of my dreams is to teach others that the r word is hurtful to people with disabilities. Instead, the new word is Respect! To do this, I will be hosting an event where people will be able to pledge to end the r word.
I would love it if you could help me achieve my dream by participating in my event. Feel free to look around my website and contact me if you have any questions or would just like to send me an encouraging message. I would love to hear from you!
